Educator Biography
My name is Mary Jo Springs. I am a widow and the proud mother of Emily Barrus, who blessed me with my brilliant grandson, Fuller!
I graduated from Columbia College and was married that same summer. I majored in Library Science and was certified to also be a teacher. I have taught fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, and tenth grade classes. I was school media specialist for 16 years, after which I was Youth Services Librarian at the Calhoun County Public Library. I continue, on a volunteer basis, a program at the library, ”Mother Goose on the Loose,” which I began fifteen years ago.
I belong to a group called The Ukuloonies. We are a group of Christian friends who enjoy singing and playing ukuleles and entertaining people of all ages. I learned to play the baritone ukulele in high school and because it’s actually a 4 string guitar, I was able to easily learn to play guitar. I played guitar for many years. I went back to the baritone uke after I became older and the uke was easier to hold and play. The great thing about the baritone ukulele is the ease of transition to the guitar.
I volunteer at least two days each week at For the Love of a Paw, an animal rescue in Elloree, SC. I am also an active member member of Jericho Methodist Church, where I am a choir member and taught Sunday school for many years.
I am very thankful that I can be a part of my precious grandson’s life by being a part of the SAFE family.
